Sharing Your Life Around the World - A Successful Pangea Day
by Darla Mack
So, what did you do this past Saturday? Much different question then "how was your weekend". As for myself, I participated in the first ever Pangea Day from the comfort of my living room recliner. I laughed, cried, felt strong communications in the lives of others across the globe.
May 10th marked the first ever Pangea Day and I must say that even if you didn't want to pay attention to the videos on the screen and the heartfelt stories that were being shared, it was hard to turn away. So I guess you can say that I hosted my own Pangea Day event in my living room.
We usually take for granted what happens outside of our own comfort zone that we call "home" to see how others live. The news only gives us brief clips of what they usually brainwash us into believing... but did you ever stop to think that what we may consider different is a way of life and survival for others?
I think Pangea Day can help us build character and possible appreciation for what makes us all unique. The one thing that I did regret was the fact that I couldn't share it with my kids. Unfortunately, they were at the grandparents and they don't get the channel. But being able to teach them what goes on outside of our backyard is important to me.
Nokia offered major support and sponsorship in this global event, and I'm sure many of you OVI users had seen the announcement of Pangea Day on the OVI site.
So what is Pangea Day?
Pangea Day was a celebration of the power of film. It featured films that were funny, sad, gorgeous, stark – and powerful. Voices that had never been heard before. Things many had never seen. Scenes from worlds few had visited. A cross-section of our amazing, complicated, noisy, beautiful world.
Besides four hours of pure entertainment, Pangea Day offered a view into other lives. After Pangea Day – after having experienced life inside so many other heads – we hope that many were moved to action. To become involved in pressing issues. To share their own video and photos. To join discussions that might move the world just a little bit further toward understanding.
The films in this program were chosen by Pangea Day's panel from more than 2,000 submissions and a long roster of curated suggestions. Together, these films moved us, frightened us, made us laugh and smile, and helped us feel closer to the world.
If you weren't able to catch the beautiful events of the day, you still can by going to pangeaday.org and don't forget to check out the winners of the Mobile Filmmaker Awards.
