Reflections of 2007 and Diving Into 2008 - A Game Plan

by Darla Mack

I'm no good at predictions.  I've often wondered how people could make predictions and be so dead on.  I think Russell Beattie has been good at this.  I can't even predict what will happen in my crazy world an hour from now!

One thing I can do though is reflect on this past year and take some positive enlightenment's with me in the upcoming year.  During 2007 I learned how to network, met more than a handful of great people, and found out that my name in fact does have worth.  In 2008 my goal is to participate in more projects.

One thing that I've neglected in my time blogging is the importance of being a female mobile blogger.  In most of the events that I've attended with Nokia I was the only "femme fetale".  This of course led the boys to believe that I was somewhat famous but the truth is that it just made me more noticeable.  The fame part is completely untrue.

Another neglect was the fact that not only am I a female mobile/tech blogger, but a black mobile/tech blogger.  I can't quite gather my feelings on that since the gender issue is of more importance to me than race, but its something that I've been introduced to think about.  (more details on that coming soon)

Another gesture that I'm hoping to work on is getting involved more with development.  It wasn't until I saw Anina's apps in motion that I realized that there MUST be a more open market out there for women.  During a discussion during Nokia World I realized that although there are a ton of different women that fall on the so called "spectrum" I am in somewhat of a unique category.  I'm a mother, and I tend to include my children in my thoughts, ideas and discoveries involving the advancement of mobile technology.  My kids are perfect test subjects.  My younges son mastered his alphabet by using the keypad of the E62.  I've blogged before how a group of 7 year olds made videos using my N73 without even asking how to make it work. I would like to see this technology used as a learning tool in some way shape or form.   In doing what I do and being who I am I have enlisted my children as  jr. mobilists for the future.  Lol, and I'm damn proud of that.

This may sound like a bit of rambling, but as with all "end-of-the-year" thoughts and reflections, this is just me trying to figure out if I've in fact done enough or should I continue doing what I do.

Part of the reason that I've been missing for the past few weeks is due to knowing when to take a break.  I admire all of those bloggers and site runners out there who even during the holidays continued to grab the latest news and tidbits for the mobile community, but for me, its the time of year where family is most important.

Ok enough mushy thinking.  It all boils down to this.... In 2008 I will DEFINE myself.  I have alot of thoughts, plans and ideas that go beyond blogging and I PLAN TO ACT ON THEM!  I advise everyone to do the same, no matter what your niche is.  Find it, enhance it, learn from it and grow from it.

So in conclusion (since this was a lenghty ramble) my sincerest wishes from my family to my online family, readers, friends, supporters and all!

May 2008 bring the year of a better more defined YOU!!!

Wow, Darla, you hit it right on! I have been thinking about the definition of "ME" myself, and I was making a couple of plans for 2008 as well. It's hard being everywhere, knowing everything, because we get lost somewhere eventually. I'd like to be only in a couple of places, know a couple of things, but know them well so I don't get lost in them. I don't know if anyone who reads this understands it, but I know you do, Darla.

Here's to a great defined 2008 to you too! And thank you for all the support you provided in 2007 ;)

Hey Darla,

There's a group over here in the UK that meet quite regularly call Women in Mobile Data... maybe you could get in touch with them about setting something up in the US? Or at least pay them a visit sometime?

I was fortunate enough to be invited along to their December lunch - they're very good events and I think you'd really enjoy the perspective they offer..

PS - A good friend of mine helps run it - http://technokitten.blogspot.com

Happy New Year to everyone!

I would really love to read about this. I was wondering why you never wrote about it.

Excellent read, I feel quite motivated now! (^_^)

It was a pleasure to meet you, albeit briefly, back in September, you certainly are unique.

I have a feeling 2008 is going to be pretty special.
