Some Apps Need To Play Catch Up For The N95
by Darla Mack
I spent some time searching the net and emailing developers and companies to get things working for my new toy.
One thing I noticed is that the Downloads! section now includes content. With the preproduction model it was left empty. Catalogs still remain empty but I'm sure that will change as more devices are released.
Some apps that I miss though are Fring and YahooGo!. I received feedback that they are in the process of working on a release of Fring for the N95, so I'll keep ya posted. With YahooGo!, I remember at Open Studio and reading the Press Package that it was available for the N95, but I guess they are still working on that.
Although Shozu doesn't list the N95 as a supported device, I went ahead and used the same .sisx file for the N73 and it works just fine. Since the N95 has built in GPS, its easy to geotag using Shozu to upload to Flickr. Interesting article on that on the N95 User Group Blog. When I had the pre-production model I tried using the Flickr uploader itself assuming that it would geotag automatically, but maybe I did that wrong.
Some games that I used which I purchased from Nokia's Software Market had to be repurchased. I think this is due to the company not responding to my email. Sis applications purchased via Nokia's Software Market are easy to just download once purchased, but the java apps are sent as a text link to your mobile. So, once again I had to repurchase Tower Bloxx (remember the drama?) and wait for my text link... which I'm still doing by the way!
EQO is working a bit weird. It always asks me for connection method repeatedly so I'll have to leave some feedback on that..
MyStands Mobile Social Player 2.6 which recently came out of beta gave me a bit of a hard time. Come to find out that there is a bit of maneuvering that a user must do to get the player to search for the music files within sub-folders. Fortunately, version 2.7 which will be in Beta soon will correct the issue of having to move music around in the file folders. Version 2.7 will search the entire device for music and also have messaging between MyStrands users.
Widsets, which recently got an upgrade, is working just fine as is Jaiku.
These are just a few of my favorite apps that I've used on other devices, so I'm hoping in the future they will be working correctly for the N95. Have you come across any other apps that aren't working right?
Great writeup. I'm interested to know more about ShoZu and the Geotagging:
1. How long can you snap pics with the GPS going before the battery dies?
2. It automatically geotags with ShoZu if you have it set to, of course) but not with the built-in Flickr uploader?
3. How accurate?
4. Try a Pocketcast. Does that automatically geo-tag, as well?

I tryed yahoo go 2.0 gamma and they sent me a text saying that N95 is not compatable yet, please enter your mobile number and we will comtact you when its available.
I think yahoo are after a operator to sell it too and restrict devices like they did with original 3rd edition devices.
ABSOULTELY SHOCKING

Hi Darla,
I was on wap.yahoo.co.uk on my N95 over the weekend and Yahoo Go! 2.0 Gamma is now available for the N95.
It's NOWHERE NEAR as good as the N73 (native Symbian) version I had previously but hey! It's better than nothing!
Give it a go..
....and try Mobizines too! ;)

Thanks for the update Whatleydude. Yeah I miss the original symbian app as well, but at least this is now available. Lol and yes I've tried Mobizines and have it installed... although the US doesn't offer much content yet.

Cool - glad you like it. I read your blog on the Mobizine RSS Reader most days on the way into work - it's cool.
As for the lack of US content...
Is there anything specific you're missing?
There are a whole host of titles available to UK subscribers.
Drop them an email [email protected] and I'm sure they'll be able to add some extra titles to your subscription...
