Interesting Tidbits on Nokia's Future

by Darla Mack

Well its Monday yet again.  I spent most of the weekend catching up on some reading and came across some interesting articles, so instead of separate blog posts on the subject I'll just give a brief summary.

Firstly, an article by Oliver Stone on GuideWire Connection.  Oliver explains that in a rare press visit to Silicon Valley, the format of a discussion ended being something along the lines of a seminar instead.  As Oliver puts it, in a "discussion" everyone gets to speak.  One thing I grabbed from his article other than the attendance of this discussion/seminar was the "tough-love" comment that he made referring to Nokia in the US market.  Oliver, I agree with you 100% and I'm with you in that percentage of people that happen to love Nokia devices.

At any rate, at the risk of upsetting people that I know and like here's some tough love: Nokia cannot be called a glowing success in the USA. Sure, they have a respectable presence here and that presence is sure to grow with things like the N800, N95 and other new devices. But compared to their domination elsewhere on the globe, they are a shadow of their true self. Certainly it could be argued that Nokia's understanding of the US market leaves something to be desired, and this is the root of their problems here.

While that is only a brief excerpt of Oliver's point, I suggest that you read the whole article.

Secondly,  Gizmodo shows us "Whats in Nokia's Future" in an interview with Bill Plummer, Nokia's North America VP of sales and channel management for Multimedia and Wilson Rothman.  WiMax handsets (by 2008?),  GPS in every phone, American HSDPA compatibility, chunky designs, the slender N76 multimedia handset, QWERTY keyboards and more.

Interesting topics and even answers to questions that I had, such as: Nokia Music Store for the US, the WiMax roll-out, and US HSDPA.
