The Need to Change Editions

by Darla Mack

I've held back on posting hacks on how to upgrade your device from regular Nseries to Internet Editions.  Good thing or bad?

For a few months now there have been hacks floating around the net with instructions on tricking the Nokia Software Updater.  Call me old-fashioned, but I don't see the need.  Many users upgraded their N73's to music edition just to have the themes... seriously.  I'm not one to judge and maybe if there were some major improvement, such as getting Catalogs to show all regional content available (see Tommi's post) I might be tempted to try myself.

But its one of those catch 22 situations.  Once you change the regional code you can't change it back.  I'm sure there is a way to override this, but since I haven't followed the topic closely I'm not aware of it.

Tommi reveals this morning that NokiaUSA does in fact mention that you can update your N80 to N80ie.

Q: How do I update my Nokia N80 to the Internet Edition?

A: Nokia N80 Internet Edition

You can update your Nokia N80 to the Internet Edition by using the Nokia Software Updater.

To download the Nokia Software Updater, please do the following:

   1. Go to http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/N80
   2. Select "Support and Software for Owners"
   3. Select "Phone Software Update"

Now although its mentioned, detailed instructions aren't given.

Fantastic. Thanks for this info DM. I too was reluctant to void the warranty on my N80, and also there are some issues with operator certificates which are needed to get service provider apps to run.

In theory a backup/restore would save them but ....

Sadly my N80 says it's up to date (I'm on 3UK), but at least I have hope that the new SW update may bring the VoIP client along ...

Thanks Nokia for what I hope to receive ...

Daniel

Hi. I tried with mine too. It's a US-bought unlocked N80 model on Cingular. It also says it's up to date.

Jeff

just checked with NSU and no N80 ie available.
i found a way to do it using Diego and Phoenix... but many people had brick their phone, I'll wait for the Nokia Update.

You can now (as of yesterday) upgrade it! http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&message.id=9585#M9585

Updated my N80 to N80 ie yesterday using the NSU. Its just like the regular upgrade. No mention of ie anywhere. The new firmware is V 4.0632.0.38.
