N80 Makes Music - 1st EP Recored By Mobile Phone

by Darla Mack

A few weeks ago Rob Dickinson released the first music video created with an N93, exploring the creative features of music and video.  Yesterday I received an email from a musician from Israel named Omri Levy.  Omri has created a an album titled "about:blank" which is a collection of demos he made using his N80 and Alon MP3 Dictafone.

"...'about:blank' is the starting point of most of my online journeys.  You start and never know where you're going to end up.  The same thing goes with this EP: it's the purest, most sincere way to serve my songs / that untarnished place where you can view the songs in their natural colors and catch their primal scent.  Most of the songs on this EP were written a few eyars ago but never found their way on any of my records."

Now I'm no expert in interviewing, but I decided to ask Omri a few questions out of curiosity.

What prompted you do experiment in creating your EP this way?

The idea to make this kind of a project came to me when i realized that these little things we call mobile phones are actually little computers. It happened to me when i first got my first Symbian phone and found a great recording app called "Alon mp3 Dictaphone'.  I recorded the first songs on Nokia 6680 and a few weeks ago i've upgraded to N80 and recorded the whole thing again in a few hours. I then transferred them to my PC and made a few level adjustments.  Although i have my own studio at home, i'm constantly looking for new ways of expressing myself. The home studio is a great environment for creating and recording music but sometimes i find myself thinking that it has way too many options, it's way too easy to add loads of tracks. but sometimes you just miss the pure shape of the song in this mess.

I love the title, what inspired you to give it that name?

'about:blank' is one of those titles that goes with me for a long time. This is the title I use at home for most of my demo tapes and i thought it's time to use it as a name to this EP. You can say that i'm a net addict and i use "about:blank" as my default home page... I like to start my web journeys with a blank screen. So the same goes with this EP: it's a collection of demo tapes... for me it's the first step in writing songs and it's the first time that i feel comfortable sharing them in that form.

How long did the whole process take with recording and editing?

The whole process of recording and editing took me about a week although most of the songs were written a long time ago but did not find their way to any of my releases.

Talk about creativity!!  Omri believes that music should be shared and currently has 2 albums on his site available for download.
