Agile Messenger PREVIEW Release Available for S60 3rd Edition

Agile Messenger has released a preview version of its popular Messaging software for S60 3rd edition devices.  I also noticed that GoogleTalk is now one of the available clients (this might be old news).

Agile Messenger for S60 3rd edtion as well as other versions can be downloaded from the company website.

Please note Agile Messenger Preview for S60v3 is unsigned. If you are unable to install due to a "Certificate Error" then changing your certificate settings to accept application certificates that are not signed will resolve the issue.

Handy Safe S60 Updated for 2nd & 3rd Edition

An update to the popular Handy Safe for S60 is finally available.  I was wondering when this was gonna happen.  Good news is that version 5 is also compatible for S60 3rd edition, so that probably defines the wait.

Handy Safe software for Symbian S60 smartphones is a perfect assistant for secure and convenient data managing. Keep your mind free from countless numbers and letters. Have all of your important information in one place, safe, easy to access, and always with you with Handy Safe software for Symbian S60. Handy Safe Desktop agent included enables you to synchronize your information between Symbian S60 smartphone and PC.

NOTE: If you have previously purchased this app awhile ago you might have to go through a little customer support issues.  I purchased mine from Handango in 2004 and the order of the serial number has changed from 9 digits to 2 groups of 8 digits on both the PC and handset.

Kaspersky Labs To Test New Mobile Antivirus Software

Fescr010_1 BetaNews reports that Kaspersky Labs is seeking beta testers for the second version of its Anti-Virus Mobile product, KAV Mobile, which protects Symbian based smartphones.  I know that some of you out there just love to have Mobile Antivirus protection and this is a good opportunity to use the product and provide feedback, many even suggest a few things.

New features of the 2.0 release include faster performance, quarantine support, as well as spam blocking for SMS and MMS messages.

Kaspersky® Anti-Virus Mobile 2.0 protects smartphones from malicious programs and unwanted messages, and provides the following features:

  • Real-time protection of the smartphone's file system against malicious applications.
  • On demand or scheduled scans of file system objects stored either on your smartphone or on memory extension cards.
  • Secure isolation of infected objects in quarantine.
  • Updating of the antivirus databases used to detect malicious applications and delete unsafe objects.
  • Blocking of unwanted SMS and MMS messages.

The user can customize Kaspersky Anti-Virus Mobile settings, monitor current protection status, and view application logs with the results of application activities.

The application has an easy-to-use menu and a user-friendly interface.

More information and downloads of Anti-Virus Mobile 2.0 are available from Kaspersky's Web site.

Spodradio - The Next Generation of Mobile Radio

Its funny how I am easily influenced by software.  Especially any type of media software.  A few days ago I talked with my buddy Frank about possibly podcasting on my site.  I'm not really sure if its something that I want to do, but it would be something that I would try.  Having that orgasmtone following me around without any sound of my real voice is a bit disturbing I think.

Fescr007_6 Frank mentioned to me about a new streaming radio app for series 60 called Spodradio.  Spodradio is the first Series 60 Mobile podcasting solution, or so it says in its user guide.  Unfortunately, the website is in German but its pretty simple to understand where the download is.  The user guide is in English.

Spodradio works with both GPRS and UTMS devices (UMTS preferred) and is supported on symbian devices such as the Nokia 6630, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681, Nokia 6682, Nokia N70 and the Nokia N91.

Spodradio offers some pretty cool features such as song rating (free), ringtone dowloads of the song playing (if available and 2.99 Euro), Discography of the artist playing and radio quizes (.49€).

Currently, the only issues that I've run into, and maybe Frank can stop by and elaborate more since he's been using it for awhile, is that the podcast option doesn't appear on my device, although it is or should be available.  According to the PDF user guide, podcasting was said to be available via subscription in March.

Another thing is that the current radio list doesn't support US stations as of yet.  Once I downloaded the app via sms, the message that I received along with the link did state that the website is in German but will be available soon in English.  In any case, I'll play around with it for a while, but chec k it out for yourself, and if you are fluent in German please post some comments... in English of course :)

PeerBox Mobile P2P Mobile Music Sharing

Banner_peerbox

Both Tommi and Jukka over at S60 have come across this new music file sharing software.  Don't get too excited though.  Although they claim to be legal you have to wonder just how thats possible.

This fits into the same category as Symella's P2P file sharing concept and the question that always concerns me is if they can fit a virus into those downloads.  Anything is possible.

One of the cool features is that you can record a portion or verse of a song and PeerBox will try and recognize it.

Once you do find a song and download it, the song is saved in your gallery and can be accessed with the Music Player.

PeerBox is currently in beta which means that all the songs are free.

Cool Symbian Freeware

Nicedial_scr_2 Rafe Blandford from AllAboutSymbian gives us a look at some new and interesting Symbian Freeware to check out.  I mean who doesn't love freeware, especially when its legitmately free.

One that I checked out was Nice Dial.  Nice Dial adds sound and animation when dialing your party's number.  Nothing complicated, but pretty cool.

Series 60 Freeware

One thing we Series 60 users love is "freeware".  Not saying that paying for it isn't rewarding, but some of the coolest apps have been freeware.  For example, FExplorer, which in my opinion is the most popular "must have" application.

Steve Litchfield has compiled a really cool table of utilites and games.  Be sure to check it out and add any freeware that you do not see there.

Handango In-Hand Catalog Available for S60

S60inhandSometime ago I had requested this.  I remember when AAS interviewed someone from Handango and I specifically asked them to find out when this would be available for Series 60 devices.  At that time it wasn't available and no date was determined.

Seems like it discretely made its way to the series 60 software section of Handango and I couldn't be happier!  You won't find it on the regular In-Hand site... don't ask me why, but its available for free download here.

via:  Handango

InHand is an on-device software catalog that simplifies the process of finding, installing and purchasing software applications and games for S60 phones.

InHand provides a new avenue -- the phone itself -- for accessing mobile software downloads. The catalog is an easy-to-use system that allows phone users to access available software.

Each application has several details you can view on the device, including name, short description, user rating, file size, and price. From within each product description, you can choose to try or buy the application. Product delivery and purchasing are completed directly via the phone so access to a desktop computer is not necessary.

This version supports Nokia 6630, 6680, 6681 and 6682 phones.

UPDATE 1/27/06:

After a few emails to Handango regarding the non-working In-Hand, I'm told that this is not yet available for Nokia handsets, even though the product page clearly states that it is.  I'm guessing that in a few days that page will no longer load and the product will be pulled... but thats just a guess.  I'll keep updating via comments on the progress of the app and emails.

Handy Safe is Just That

I'm sure there are several s60 applications out there that some users claim that they can't live without.  You know; that one that you constantly have to contact developers about to inform them of your new imei# since you've switched phones.  With FExplorer being my first choice when using a new device let me introduce you to my second.

Safe_3 Handy Safe by Epocware has definately been an asset to me since the days of my 3650.  Trust me... having this app has made more room in my wallet and whatever bag I'm carrying at the time.  Being a mom it makes it much easier for me to carry my sons ss#'s, insurance card info and those dumb prescription numbers that the pharmacy always asks you for assuming that you have them. (I think you get the point!)

HandySafe is both a phone app and pc app which allows you to sync information between both.  As far as security goes, both are password protected so your information is safe.

I strongly recommend this app if you like to have certain personal or important info at your fingertips rather then having to carry actual documents or cards around with you.  At $5.00 (estimate) its the best investment you could have for your device.

Share Your Series 60 Freeware

Some of the best apps that I have for my 6630 are freeware apps.  The most popular and I think the ultimate fav on everyones list is FExplorer.  Series 60 users can tell you that its the first app that you should install on your new phone and I definately agree.  But what about other cool freeware apps?

Tommi over at S60 has an article on his S60 blog titled "Freeware Mania" where he is compiling a list of best freeware apps and best freeware sites for series 60 devices.  Please check it out and add your freeware apps or site to the list.

Upload Your Flickr Photos with ShoZu

ShozuShoZu is a really cool app that allows you to upload images to your Flickr account straight from your mobile.

ShoZu is free for download but requires authorization from the Flickr website.  Once you begin the download/install from the ShoZu site it will walk you through the steps of Flickr authorization.

ShoZu requires that you have Internet service through your service provider since the application is sent for download via sms.

Saving to Flickr:  Once activated, each time you take a new photo, ShoZu will give you the option of  uploading to Flickr (You may turn this off if you wish). If you click OK, the photo will be uploaded quietly in the background, leaving you free to do other things.

Descriptions and Tagging:  You can also save items to Flickr later, from within the ShoZu application. This allows you to take your time to choose which images to upload or add a description or tags to each image. To add a tag, just type in the keyword within angled brackets (e.g. '<beach sailing>') at the end of your description.

Emailing:  Using ShoZu, you can also send your images by email directly from your phone to one of the contacts in your address book.

I've downloaded and installed this app to the 6630 and 6682 with no problems and was able to upload one of my images to my Flickr account just as easy.

ShoZu supports most Symbian devices but check their website for supported handsets.

I definately think this is a cool app, not to mention free, for all you Flickr addicts out there!!

Stay In Touch with Business and Personal Contacts

Hancheeft announced 8/26 the unveiling of InTouch. This is a new reminder utility for S60 Series cell phones(see list below) . It enables you to schedule a phone call and get reminded with a sound alert when the scheduled time is achieved. New to this software is the unique ability to schedule a call immediately after your phone talk is over.

IntouchInTouch pops up a prompt asking you whether you want to schedule a follow-up call to the contact. The same prompt pops up when the contact number is busy and your call is not answered. You can schedule a repeat call at a later time and get reminded again. Along with outgoing calls, InTouch provides this prompt for all received and missed incoming calls.

InTouch is a nice software companion for any S60 Series(see list below) phone owner who doesn't want to forget about important phone calls.  Instead of juggling calls, contacts and dates on paper or in your head, this software allows you to store all this in your cell phone and get reminded of scheduled calls automatically. Scheduling a call is easy. If you are doing it from the phonebook, you need to select a phone number from the contact list, specify the time and date or time period, subject of the call and a reminder type, either a sound alert or a popup reminder. The subject can be entered as a free text or selected from the set of templates which include "Hello", "Ask for appointment", and others. The database of schedules is searchable and you can search for a schedule based on such criteria as name, number, start time, end time, start date, and end date. All settings related to scheduling, alarm, and search can be customized to your preferences.

MobiMedic Review

I came across a post on Textually.org about this kewl first aid application for your mobile.

Mobi-Medic is an interactive mobile phone utility that can be used as a First Aid guide.

The concept of the application has many positive points, except for the lack of aid for diabetics.  It covers 21 different types of emergencies emergencies, ranging from asthma and heart attacks to burn, choking, bleeding, animal bites, back injuries, unconsciousness, etc and provided on the response that the user inputs, gives a solution to the problem at hand.

Now, me being a mother, my kids always fall into some sort of "trouble" so having something like this handy is a plus to me.

For example, my youngest son happened to be playing with the straw portion of the weed killer bottle (don't ask).

So, if I had this app at the time of my mishap, these would be the steps that I would follow:

Mobimedic_screenshots

I repeat, this is an excellent app to have, but could use some improvements, or additional emergency techniques.  But its the best way to carry a mobile first aid guide with you if needed!!

Mobi-Medic can be purchased on Handango's site for $9.99 and is available for Series 60, SE P800 and SE P900.

Contacts Transfer for Series 60

So, I just got my replacement Nokia 6600 Friday from T-Mobile.  Its funny that in the 11th month of my warranty my original 6600 just stopped working correctly... (I think it might have been jealous of the 6630).

One of the things that is annoying is, how to transfer contacts and bookmarks.  Well this time I didn't want to go through the hassle of going into the phones menu, copying the contacts.db file and yada yada yada.  Instead I came across this app on SymbianPhones which even though takes the same amount of time as my original procedure, but proves to be more affective for those that don't want to tamper with thier files.

Fescr000_4 Contacts Transer is a very simple app that is installed on both the sending and receiving series 60 handset.  It transfers all contact info including thumbnails and groups via bluetooth, infared or memory card from one device to the new device.

The Nokia 6630 comes with a transfer app but its only a one-way thing... unless someone knows of a way to make it work.

SMS Tray for Nokia Series 60

This has become one of my favorite apps for my phone.  I have what you would call a unique situation.  I live in an almost rural area where GSM coverage is bare, but with the help of bluetooth accessories and a phone with great reception, I definately get by.

Now thats gotten even better for me!!  Thanks to SMS Tray by WildPalm UK for their easy pc integration process allowing messages that are sent to your phone to be forwarded to your desktop via bluetooth.

Now this comes in handy for a person like me for several reasons.  When I'm at my pc I don't have to get up and go to my phone, which because of said circumstances is in the other room.  And second, because I have unlimited text messaging it allows me to send and receive messages to the Upoc group that I belong too... and let me tell you those peeps at Hofo Nite Crew talk alot!!!

Installing SMS Tray is very simple, but can only be used with Windows XP running SP2 and any Nokia Series 60 handset.  Once the app is installed to your pc, then install the sis file to your phone.  Nothing major, nothing fancy...  You can turn  SMS Tray on or have it run in the background of your phone.  Once your phone finds the bluetooth connection with your pc your all done!!  Another kewl factor is that it searches for your phones address book making all of your contacts readily available on your desktop.  Viola!! Simplicity at its best.

Sms_tray_1SMS Tray runs in your pc's taskbar.  Once a message is recieved a balloon will show up with the sender name and number if they are in your address book.  If its a new contact just the number will appear.

Sms_tray_4_4

Incoming messages are highlited in green and outgoing messages are in red. (simple)  To respond to a message simply highlight the message and click open.

Sms_tray_6

So, as you can see SMS Tray is very simple and easy... remember that this will only work correctly with WinXP SP2.  What more can I say except thanks to WildPalm for making a great app!!

SMS Tray is available via Handango for $14.99 USD and a trial is also available on the site as well.

Lol, thanks to HoFo Nite Crew for letting me plaster your name all over my review!!

Avantgo and the Nokia 6630

Avantgo003After having such a tough time trying to figure out why Avantgo wouldn't work on the 6600 I decided to just not think about it and just use it on the N-Gage.  Seems like Avantgo left off with the 3650 and 7650 according to its site.  I decided today to give it a shot on Charlie and low and behold it works!!!

Having thought that my poor Avantgo account had been dormant I was proud that I had  drank enough Ginseng tea to remember my login information.

Installation was no problem at all, mind you I was keeping fingers crossed the whole time.  Once installed and I ran the software it came time to connect to Avantgo's servers and sync.  I used T-Mobile's VPN instead of T-Zones.  Syncing worked, and there were my channels!!!!!  I opened each one to see if everything worked ok and that Charlie could handle it without freezing or shutting down.  I'm happy to say that it works well.

Since I know this might be an issue, the fw that I have is 2.39.15.

Symantec Antivirus for Symbian (Nokia)

T_t_pc_nok_05_2_2

Symantec, creators of Norton's Antivirus, have released a Mobile Edition to their popular PC Security Program.  Currently, it seems that the application is only available for the following Nokia handsets:

  • Nokia 6260
  • Nokia 6600
  • Nokia 6620
  • Nokia 6630
  • Nokia 6670
  • Nokia 7610
  • Nokia 9300
  • Nokia 9500

UPDATE: Since installing this, I've noticed that it slows down the phone (6630), which shouldn't be surprising to those that have used Norton's.

News Lite for Flash Lite 1.1

Flash002_5News Lite is a free RSS News Reader entirely developed in Macromedia Flash Lite 1.1 techonolgy.   Created by Leonardo Risuleo, the reader comes in both English and Italian versions.  So far this is the first mobile content that I have seen since the release of Macromedia's Flash Lite but there are some ideas in the works over at the Flash developers forum Mobile Flash Community.

The English version contains content from Yahoo.com, BBC.com, New York Times.com and Wired.  The Italian version contains the same with the addidtion of  Ansa.it.

I've tested this both on the Nokia 6600 and the 6630 and it seems to work very well.

PicoBlogger Update 2

Thanks to Mark from PicoStation I was able to receive the beta of the new update, scheduled to be available in about 10 days. The update will now support T9 input for those of us that use both upper and lower case to login to our blogs. There is also a default blog for PicoBlogger which has its own moblog on its website. I HIGHLY recommend this app to anyone that uses multiple blog accounts. There is an option to choose your default blog which is great if you have more than one.

Moblog with PicoBlogger.

Lol it took me almost 7 minutes to type the above on my phone!!  Another thing I forgot to mention is that now you are able to include files or images that you already have stored on your handset as well as taking a new pic.  If you are like me you might have images on your phone that ya meant to blog, but didn't get a chance too.  Much easier this way.

Thanks again Mark.  Great Job!!!!

PicoBlogger Update

Moblog software for your camera phone | PICOSTATION.

After using this application for a couple weeks, I've managed to notice some of the cons. While its still the first version, I'm hopeing some of the quirks will be worked out with future upgrades.
First thing is the T9 input as far as logging into your blog. There is no way to input caps. My Typepad login has capital letters so with this version there is no way that I can set it up to work with Typepad. I've contacted the developer and was assured that a new version would indeed fix that problem.
Second, the application uses the phones default camera, but not all of its features. The 6600 has 3 different views, standard, portriat and night; all of which you can zoom on. With PicoBlogger, the option to utilize these options is missing. You can only capture the image using standard.
Don't get me wrong, I still think the concept of the whole deal is great and if you check my moblog, you'll see that most of my recent images have been with this software. Lol, I'm actually filling in titles and listing what the images are about instead of just sending an image via mms (which is costly now that T-Mobile has changed its MMS limit).
I still think this app is worth a try and even to purchase, but like with all symbian software... only feedback will give the developers a heads up!!!

A New Way to Blog!!

PICOBLOGGER

After using Blogia for awhile I think I've been sold on another series 60 app that satisfies my needs. PicoBlogger does more... being able to post to multiple blogs at once takes the cake. And the kicker that made me hit the purchase button on Handango's website was the fact that I can post to my TextAmerica Moblog!!!
PicoBlogger combines the use of images with its snap and publish feature allowing you to snap the pic once the app is open, instead of using the phones camera and tap tap tapping until you get the the mms or email screen and then of course looking up your secret address in your contacts list. (yeah way to much travelling around the phone!!) Besides TextAmerica, PicoBlogger is compatible with BLOGGER, LiveJournal, Movable Type, Typepad and most Blog services. Since I use Typepad, LiveJournal and TextAmerica I can now post to all 3 if I choose. Lol, although TA and Typepad are it for me at the moment!!

This Makes Having MMS Worth Every Penny!!

FaceWave
This will be my first software review (so please be kind!!) FaceWave by Anthropics Technology has proven to be a very cool application for MMS users. I tried the demo on Handango's website and immediately fell in love with it!! The app is available for both Series 60 and UIQ platforms and has additional faces that can be ordered. The first thing that I liked was the price (gotta remain thrifty!) One thing to keep in mind is that in order to send the message the recipient must have a compatible phone. Luckily, most of my peeps just got finished grabbing up Nokia 6600's from T-Mobile once it was released here in the US.
Once installed the app is very easy to use. It creates a spot right in your new message menu and from there you can select which character you would like to use, add your voice message and viola!! Once you preview your message, hit send and your done! One of the things that I look for when I'm interested in apps is customer support. Anthropics customer service gets 5 stars from me!!!
