N Series Proporta Power Challenge: Day 2

by Matthew

On this second day of the power challenge it became clear solely replying on the Proporta Mobile Device Charger was not only impractical, potentially impossible with solely one Proporta unit but even more importantly as our reader "gore" pointedly commented not a real world scenario. Keep reading to see how this challenge will continue based on current observations and limitations.

Tuesday March 11th:

  • 1242 - 95* low battery warning
  • 1250 - Simultaneously charge 95 & Proporta
  • 1600 - Proporta no longer charging 95
    • No battery full message
    • Restarted charging 95
  • 1630 - Original challenge postponed
    • 95 displaying 3 bars
    • 810** displaying 2d/1h
    • Mobile Devices charging via normal wall charger
  • 1640 - Proporta showing full charge
  • 1700 - Leaving work
  • Overnight
    • Charged Proporta via wall outlet
    • Charged 810 normally
    • Charged 95 normally

Wednesday March 12th

  • 0718 - All devices disconnected
    • 95 displaying 3 bars (apparently disconnected or went unconnected overnight)
    • 95 charging via Proporta
    • 810 fully charge
    • Proporta fully charged

As previously mention one of the readers "gore" stated how he thought this experiment wasn't a real would test. While I do agree in most cases that would be true, I would also argue this kind of scenario could be "real" for some unlucky soul. Not to this extreme I did find myself in a similar situation on my trip to Spain. Due to the weather I barely made my connecting flight from DFW to Madrid through Chicago. If I barely made the flight, you can bet my luggage did not. Having the foresight to pack plenty of accessories for my laptop and mobile but not the foresight to also pack at least one European outlet adapter I found myself in a tight situation. Fortunately I landed early enough to stop by a local store to purchase an emergency phone charger but not as fortunately to find such a store with a US-European outlet adapter I could at least charge my phone, the same could not be said for my laptop. If I had the Proporta Travel kit with me, I would not only be able to charge my phone but have extra power to spare while I waited that extra 24 hours for my luggage to arrive. Consider for a moment if I were stuck in an airport. The once bad power situation could be quite dire. Regardless of the circumstances or what-if scenarios endlessly argued or played out the fact is the Proporta while an excellent accessory is not designed for this kind of use. Second even if it were designed for such use being able to charge it via USB would not likely be an option with an equally dead laptop battery. Therefore if being able to charge via USB for an extended period so is direct outlet charging of the phone or the Proporta itself. For this reason my challenge has drastically changed. For the remainder of the week I shall only charge the 95 or 810 with the Proporta while charging each nightly. I act as if I do not have an outlet readily available during my waking hours while maintaining my regular usage patterns. Less an experiment now more a trial the Power Challenge shall continue.

*95 = Nokia N95-3 **810 = Nokia N810
