Do you have "Nomophobia?"
by Matthew
Can you bare to be without your mobile device? Do you feel naked or lost without it? If so you may suffer from Nomophobia. Nomophobia or "No Mobile Phobia" according to Evening Standard in the UK "it's becoming the plague of our 24/7 age."
In a time when everything must have a name and everyday a new affliction is identified or re-identified, I have to wonder will they develop a pill or go for a 12 step for this latest affliction "plaguing" our society?
At least suffers of Nomophobia can't claim Telephonophobia (fear of telephones), Technophobia (fear of technology), Phonophobia (fear of noises or voices or one's own voice; of telephones), text addicts certainly can't claim Verbophobia (Fear of words), Graphophobia (fear of writing) but could always text in private if suffering from Scriptophobia (fear of writing in public), and we'd all be screwed if we suffered from Electrophobia (fear of electricity) but you might not even use a mobile phone if you have Cancerophobia or Carcinophobia (fear of cancer) but if you didn't you might use your mobile on your rightside if you had Levophobia (fear of things to the left side of the body) or on the left if you had Dextrophobia (fear of things to the right side of the body). You would be in trouble if you had Chronomentrophobia (fear of clocks) as every mobile has a clock built-in and tells time but you wouldn't use many minutes if suffereing from or Chronophobia (fear of clocks or time). Even if not suffering from any of these you may never decide which mobile device to buy in the first place if suffering from Decidophobia (fear of decisions). We'd never have to worry about your mobile disturbing anyone if you suffer from Ligyrophobia (fear of loud noises). You'd probably still have a bag phone or quite a large phone if suffering from Tapinophobia (fear of small objects).
I don't expect to hear from any Doxophobia (fear of expessing opinions) or Allodoxaphobia (fear of opinions) suffers about this post as you couldn't tell me your thoughts or even read such a post.
Oh %&$@#! Where did I leave my phone? Sorry folks I can't type any more until I find it.....

While the naming is a bit dubious, the chronic checking of phones (in particular with Crackberry and iPhone users) is definitely real. During SXSW, I just couldn't believe the frequency at which people grabbed their phones to check email, Twitter, SMS, or just look at the time!
Granted it was our main means of communication for meeting up with people in a huge convention centre, but some people sadly couldn't hold a complete conversation without reaching for their phones many times.

Hi, interesting post! I didn´t know the term Nomophobia, but I can tell that many persons depend on them, more functions, more dependency.
