Are You Sharing Yet? A Look Into Ovi's Online Share

by Darla

Ovishare

Online media sharing has been a big thing for many years.  Back when TextAmerica was making its mark on sharing media content, it seemed like the world had a new reason to appreciate their camera phones.

Consumers started uploading and building communities, sharing vast images of their lives and surroundings to many others across the globe.  I myself have made many friends through Textamerica and even meet up with my roommate from school via the web so that we could share images of our kids.  At that point no one really suspected that "poof" one day the service would fall and all of those images would be gone.

Enough of the mushy storyline... lets fast-forward to Ovi's Online Share.  In an A+, top-notch presentation given by Serena Glover I began to notice that this method of service is all that one should need.  By allowing over 100 different file types to be uploaded there shouldn't be a reason to have multiple accounts on the net for different files.  Yes while YouTube is very popular for videos and Flickr may be the spot for images, ovi creates and offers a standard location for all of your media.  Basically put... there is no reason to break the timeline of life as it goes on by having your media spread across the net.  Does that make sense?  Lol, maybe if you are a parent you can quite understand the meaning.

I can't quote word for word the scenario that Serena presented, but it was amazing enough that I related to it.  Let's say that you are a parent on the PTO board.  You can create a channel specifically for this.  Allow other parents to join.  Create a contact list of all participants.  Each participant can share event photos like the community bake sale and such.  I hope you are getting the picture.    For me this means that all of my media can be uploaded and viewed in one location.

Another important factor is brand name.  We all know that Nokia is far from vanishing, so consumers have that feeling of confidence when it comes to their media content.  Of course this doesn't mean that one shouldn't back-up their content (like someone just recently suggested to me), but trusting the brand makes me feel like it won't just up and disappear.  To me that says alot.

Currently, the Nokia N73, N82 and N95 Online Share 3.0 has been updated to include the new Ovi configuration file.  Simply go to Online Share on your mobile device and select update services.  You must have the most up to date fw on your device and have the latest version of Online Share which can be found on Nokia Beta Labs.  Now keep in mind that this doesn't mean that we will no longer see Lifeblog.  That was one of the questions that I had.  According to what I was told, Lifeblog will still be in the picture and might have its own spot on Ovi once all is said and done.  So there are no worries there.

So as you can tell by know, I'm sold on Ovi's Online Share.  Have you started sharing yet?

UPDATE:  For those who have an N73, N82 or N95 that are having problems updating their Online Share 3.0 to include Ovi, I have uploaded the configuration file to my MOSH page.  Please note that its best to get the file via your mobile so that it will install correctly.  The mobile url is here.

Well I haven't actually started sharing anything yet, I must say I most definitely will. I just love the simple interface, the many, many options, the number of filetypes they support, and so on. I think it's a big step forward in online sharing. I just hope it'll get the attention it deserves, because, imho, once you've tried it, you won't go back to other services.

Oh yes... OVI's concept is damn cool.. been using it since last week! :)

I am still waiting for geotagging support on Share for Ovi -> before I switch from flickr. Right now, flickr is (unfortunately) still my favorite photo sharing service. :(

This still isn't working for me with share online. Is it working for other people in the UK with a N82?

@Joel, are you having problems updating your N82 to include the new service option? Make sure that you have the most recent version of Share Online 3.0. I'll edit the post to include a link to download the configuration file.

Hi Darla, I am a one of your fan, thanks a lot for the OVI cfg file, as I am from India only Vox was in the Online Share 3.0. And one more thing do you have flickr cfg file as even Flickr is missing. Once again thanks alot

Is there a chance to use Online Share 3 to post to blogger.com?
