Turn Your N95 Into a Powerhouse with 4GB of Memory

by Darla

AllAboutSymbian informs that their are new 4GB SDHC microSD cards out there to turn our N95's into mean multimedia machines.  Lol Rafe didn't use those exact words but packing 4GB of memory... what would you call it?

It's been confirmed that they work well with the N95 but are not supported by Nokia.  SanDisk provides a 5 year warranty on their cards.

MyMemory has lowered the price from £51.99 to £39.99 on the cards since Rafe's post on Monday, but they are currently out of stock.

Sounds like a great way to beef up memory.  Does anyone know of any other online retailers?

I've heard Verizon Wireless of all places has them for around 99 bucks.

www.flash-memory-store.com claims to have them for $99.95 shipping in 10-14 business days.

I picked mine up at my local Verizon Wireless store. They have it marked as $99.99 but when I checked out they gave me 25% off for some reason, bringing it down to 75 bucks.

OK here's today's best tip! You can purchase Sandisk's 4GB microSDHC from any verizon wireless store. Locate the closest store to you via www.verizonwireless.com, may be give a call in advance to double check. You can also purchase it online from their website. (This is because of the fact that Verizon is in cooperation with Sandisk as regards to the sales of 4GB microSDHC for some compatible cell phones of Verizon.
Here is the caveat: It works perfectly with my N95 with the firmware below:
V 11.0.026
17-04-07
RM-519
Nokia N95 (C7.01)
I am not sure whether it will work with the non-firmware updated N95s.
I also contacted Kingmax, another manufacturer of 4GB microSDHC cards. The guy that I spoke to was very knowledgeable, he assured me that their card is not working with Nokia N95, with either the initial firmware or the new firmware. We discovered that when he presses *#0000#, his screen shows up all the things I gave above, except with one difference: he has 12.01 in parenthesis instead of C7.01. He told me that his N95 is from Asia, and I believe this is the factor that causes the problem...
Shortly it seems that the compatibility of microSDHC cards is still an issue. But the good news is that according to what he told me upon his correspondence with Nokia, Nokia's intention is to confront this compatibility problem via firmware updates. It could have been the contrary if Nokia had considered to limit N95's external memory with 2GB.
For the ones who are wondering about the performance of Sandisk's microSDHC, it is really great! Much more faster, and as far as I know, consumes less battery. Bear in mind that Kingmax also sells with the same price of Sandisk (99$) but with a higher class code. The thing is Sandisk's class code is 2, which is the lowest, whereas Kingmax's is 4. So Kingmax's microSDHC is faster. The guy that I spoke to also confirmed that they are going to release a 4GB microSDHC with class code 6 (highest class code) within 1 month. The price is not determined yet.

I have a problem with the 4gb card on my N95. Everything seems to work just fine except when I want to personalize my email tone or new sms tone. When I choose to change the tone, I only get the option to download, or turn off.

When I remove the card, all of the preloaded Nokia tones as well as music stored in phone memory are available for selection. However, as soon as I instert the 4bg card, the problem above occurs.

This doesn't happen with my 2gb card, although I use the same folder structure on the card. Strange! Any ideas?

This is also a problem when trying to personalize the ringtone from the 'profile -> personalize' menu. Selecting a song from my music library as a ringtone works fine, though.

Anyway, if there is anyone who has experienced this and has figured out a way around it - please let us know!

I have the same problem with my N95 and 4GB card.

As you mentioned, when the card is not present, the choice for SMS/email/alarm tunes works differently then with 4GB card present in the phone.

So I simply copied the sounds I wanted to play into the phone memory, took off the card, set the tunes as I wanted and pushed the card back.

A bit annoying, but the only solution I have been able to find on internet or wherever I checked...
