Changing Fonts on S60 3rd Edition Devices!

Sometimes when you stop searching for something it just pops up outta nowhere!!  These things I always rely on Symbian-Freak for and on the forum there is a thread on changing fonts for S60 3rd edition.  Now that post has been there for awhile, and I was too afraid to try it out simply because the instructions seemed a bit too hard.

BUT... after reading through the tutorial a bit I did a bit of tinkering myself and hopefully came up with an easier way or method of "getting it done".

Neuropol is my signature font.  Well not really MINE but the one that I chose to use.  Since many users on Symbian-Freak swear by Y-Browser so I decided to use this app.

Ok... basically you find whichever .ttf font that you want to use.  In my case I just went to the font folder on c:/windows/font on my laptop.  Pay close attention... what you NEED to do is create a folder on your desktop.  Name that folder Fonts.  Since you cannot just copy and paste a font from that windows folder, its safer to have both the fonts folder from your windows drive open AND the fonts folder that you just created on your desktop (which should be empty at this point).  With both windows side by side, select the font that you would like to use and MOVE it to the other font folder by holding down the control button and dragging and dropping to your new font folder.

Fonts_tutorial1

From the font folder that you created you can now right click and select copy and move it back to the windows font folder.  Once thats done you can close out the windows font folder.

Now at this point you should have your created font folder open with the font that you moved inside.  From that one font type you need to create 3 copies.  Don't worry about the titles, we will change that later.  Right click the font and select copy.  From the edit tab on the toolbar select paste.  So basically you are copying and pasting within the same folder.

Now its time to rename the files of your font.  Open Y-Browser from your device.  Select z:/resource/fonts.  Here is where you will find the names of the fonts that are preinstalled on your device.  Keep in mind that different devices have different font names.  So far I've tried this on the N73 and N95 and each device has different font names.

Fonts_tutorial

Once you have the correct file names from your device you can now go back into your created folder on your desktop and rename the files.   The titles shown above were the font types that are installed on my N95.  Now that doesn't mean that this will work on all N95's because the font types might differ by region, especial the APAC region.

Once you have renamed the files you can close the window.  Now its time to transfer them to your device.

This next method can be done 2 ways.  I suggest using a card reader because after the fonts are installed to the memory card you can no longer use the phone in Mass Storage or Data transfer mode.

The second method is to connect your phone via USB and select Mass Storage or Data Transfer.  Once connected and the file manager opens, go to your Resource Folder.  This will be your E:/ drive.  Open the Resource folder and copy your Fonts folder stored on your desktop to this location.  Once the transfer is complete close all windows and go to the USB folder on your phone and select PC Suite mode.  The reason that I do this is because it is safer to power off the device once out of Mass Storage or Data Transfer.

Power off your device and power back on... Viola!!!!!

Screenshot0004_2Screenshot0009

Screenshot0071

The image on the left is from the N73.  The middle image is from the N75 and the image on the right is from the N95.  Now of course I'm sure that this font isn't all that , but its a great compliment to my theme!

To restore your original fonts, simply put your memory card into your card reader and open the file manager from PC Suite (if it doesn't automatically open).  Go to the Resource folder and delete the whole Font folder that you created.  Once you put the memory card back into your phone and power it on your original fonts will be restored.

Thanks to new blogger S60TV.com for his post and Symbian-Freak's thread for keeping me up 2 hours trying to get this to work on my N95!!  Now if someone can point me in the direction of changing the Op Logo on S60 3rd edition I'd be a very happy camper!

KEEP IN MIND, WITH ANY S60 HACK, ESPECIALLY WITH 3RD EDITION YOU WANT TO BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN DOING THEM.  IF YOU DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE THEN BY ALL MEANS DO NOT PROCEED!  I CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR PHONE!

This is great. Can't wait to get started..Thanks!

If you want to copy something it shouldn't be necessary to move it from it's original location to the new one. Just use modifiers namely control, shift or alt to change the way Explorer handles the file.

alternatively you can also select the file you want control C for copy and then move to the folder you want to copy and use control V

To copy a file
Press and hold down the CTRL key while you drag the file to another folder.

moving system files outside their intended folders is never a good thing.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126449

Thanks for that. I did at first put the files in E:\Resource and not E:\Resource\Fonts and they did not work. Now its fine.

Made a little batch file up to copy the files directly to the memory card where the card is "J:" and the font name for my N80 is S60xxx.ttf

cd c:\temp\fonts
del *.ttf
copy \windows\fonts\%1.ttf c:\temp\fonts\S60SNR.TTF
copy c:\temp\fonts\S60SNR.TTF c:\temp\fonts\S60SSB.TTF
copy c:\temp\fonts\S60SNR.TTF c:\temp\fonts\S60TSB.TTF
copy c:\temp\fonts\S60SNR.TTF c:\temp\fonts\S60ZDIGI.TTF
copy c:\temp\fonts\*.ttf j:\resource\fonts /Y

So, called "CopytoS60.bat jokerman"

Paul

Ahhh...my N73 got bricked.

not..jk... love the site.

Lol Monadi you shouldn't scare me like that!!!!

yup Darla, Robert Nicholson is right... I was wondering why the 'eck you went through all that 2 windows with drag n drop thing. Just open c/windows/fonts then highlight the font you want, click CTRL + C, then go to the destination folder and hit CTRL + V... That's mainly how I copy my fonts from pc to pc, or give some of my fonts to my friends.
That's also mainly how I do all the copy/pasting I need to do on my pc. Right click then copy is just a thing from the past :D
Anyway, this trick has been on for months now, though I never gave it a shot... I think now I'll do. My signature font is palatino linotype (i do also use sylfaen from time to time)

I got a N95... but wit mass storage i only see C:\ and E:\, but E:\ is the memorycard. I treid everything. Got a extra hint for the N95? I also cant copie them in the map wit Y-browser or Fexplorer... thats blocked...

I got a N95. But if i choose Mass Storage.. I see C: and E:, but E: is my memory card! And C is the basis phone memory... I tried to copie from memorycard to Font map wit Y-browser en Fexplorer but that is blocked. So maybe got a tip for the N95? thnx

sorry i just see the moderation :$

@Robert... thanks for shortening that step for me. Lol I am actually aware of that but for some reason didn't use it. DOH!!

@Rita ditto what I said to Robert :) Yeah I know its been on Symbian-Freak for awhile, and I've looked at it and looked at it, but it was the post on S60tv.com that prompted me to get my butt in gear and do it.

@Mau Maus... did you get it working yet?

I tried to change the font but it didnt work I changed the names and but on the font folder on my E61 there is 3 font name and the one I created that has four So i m little confuse about that part. and i downloaded the Y browser and once I connect the USB the frist time it was ok with the connection but now every time i connect it says it is being used by another application so it cant be done. Can u please help me...

Those tricks already were posted on forums a few month ago.

@Faisal... if your E61 only has 3 font files then only rename 3 instead of 4. Because your new fonts are stored on the memory card, it will make it impossible to use in data transfer mode, thats why you are getting that message. Using a card reader and not the data transfer method on the E61 correct the font folder that you created on the memory card to only contain 3 and name them the same as whats on your E61. That should work.

@William .... I'm aware of that, thats why I put at the beginning of the post that it had been on Symbian-Freaks for awhile, but I just got around to doing it.

Does anybody know how to restore the original font?

@Friedbrains.... Font Magnifier is a no go on the N75. Myself and someone else messed up the N75 installing that app, so I don't advise it for all phones.

@ACTPOHABT

To restore or revert back to the original fonts, use a card reader and delete the Font folder from e:/Resource. Once you restart the phone the original fonts will be restored.

Thanks, Darla! I'll give it a try tonight when I get back home! One more question: is it E drive or Z drive, cause both have resource/Fonts path on them? :) tnanks again!

Now if someone can point me in the direction of changing the Op Logo on S60 3rd edition I'd be a very happy camper!... I dont know about change, but if you want NO LOGO is there a chance to do it!

http://nologo.sourceforge.net/ota1.php

In he link you must follow the instructions and enjoy!

After install over free wifi then open nologo select you operator eg: vodafone
type in your mobile number allow send text message (yes) then save sms logo
thats it all done.

@diego... thanks for that, but I'm lookin more to change my logo, like use my own graphic or text instead of just removing it all together :)

@ACTPOHABT... email me when you get home. If I'm online I'll try and walk you through it. You don't want to do anything to the Z drive!!!

Worked like a charm! ;) Thanks, Darla! :)

just wanna thank Darla for the great font changing guide.. I know that there are earlier font-changing guides out there i think around january-march of this year or even earlier but i was unsuccessful in following all of those.. they were unclear of exactly what to do.. im glad Darla always puts up a font-changing guide on new phones, i remember she also made a font-changing guide on s60 ver2 phones; the one with the font remover thing.. i am so glad that using Darla's easy and comprehensible step-by-step guide, i was finally able to do it.. I changed my boring n73 font to a Tahoma font.. Well, i know there are wacky and newer fonts out there but i like the sleek look and readability of the Tahoma..

DARLA IS TRULY THE ONE AND ONLY MOBILE DIVA!!

hai

I still didn't got it working on my n95 :( I tried so much.. everywhere i could put a "#:\resoucre\font" folder i did... but nothing works.. could you make some sort of guide for the n95 how you done that?

thnx alot in advance

Hiya Mau Maus,

The steps in this guide I originally tested on my N95 first and everything worked fine. What part are you having problems on? You only need to put the Font folder in the Resource drive on E... not everywhere else. Only one spot.

Wel E:\ is my memorycard... and i put it there also.. same font as yours ;) but when i restart nothing happends :(

resource map isn't standard on my e:\ memorycard.. i had to creat it myself.. i dont know what more i can tell you :$

@Mau Maus... are you connected using PC Suite or Mass Storage (Data Transfer)?

i tried both... and i treid with a cardreader. i can see hidden files or maps on e:\ like "lifeblog" but not resource... so i created myself.. also as hidden... but didn't work :(

My N73 got the following files in the font folder.

1. S60CC.ccc
2. S60TCHK.ccc
3. S60ZDIGI.ttf

Which file(s) should I rename and put them on the memory card? Thanks!

i guess you don't see an way-out for me? Thanks anyway for the help... hopefully it will work for me someday..

sorry if my englisch was so bad :P

hello everyone
now Font Magnifier by Psiloc works with all symbian 3rd edition mobile phone, even with N75 and 6290

Super Smashing Great ........ !!!!!!!!

how do u delete/ change the font again after installing it through mass storage? the card reader in my laptop hasnt been working for a long time. is there a way to change the font again? or do i need to get a new card reader?

FOR NOKIA N95___--->

You must rename the files in order for them to work!!!!!!!!!

To the above like darla`s post of the screenshot images to the right. Just copy any ttf file and make a copy three times of the same ttf file and rename the 3 files to NOHINDITSB60,NOHINDISNR60,NOHINDISSB60

and copy to the memory card resource/fonts

might sometimes need to make a forth one and name it S60ZDIGI if necessary.

plz help!
i have installed fonts on my phone (nokia e60) with *.sis file and something was gone wrong, only changes is on screensaver clock and calculator digits (mistiq symbols). now i cant remove these fonts. they are on c:\resource\fonts. when i put new fonts on e:\resource\fonts and reboot phone, fonts installed with *.sis apear on all phone, except these digits in screensaver and calc. tryed phone software reinstall, also something wrong (imposible) close to end goes error.

Any suggestions?

sorry my poor english :))

hey there,

I've got a brand new N95 and like other users here the "e:" is my mem. card. and the "z:/resource/font" is locked, can't modify it (switched read only on and off no dif.) I haven't been able to get the font working... I transfered a font from the n73 (way better font) but no luck... did anyone figure out how to change the font on a N95?

I even created "e:/resource/font" but still no luck after reboot....

@Marvin,

The only thing you are supposed to do with the z:/ drive is view the names of the fonts. Are you saying that you can't view anything on your z:/ drive? How did you transfer a font if you haven't renamed them?

@Rob,

I don't know much about the sis font installer. I didn't want to install a sis... I found this way better for me. Have you tried uninstalling the sis that you installed?

Hi All

Dunno if its the case with err'one elses Phones but with my N80IE
fonts: 'S60SNR.ttf' /..SSB... /..TSB... needed to be in capitals
i tried in lower case, and it didn't work, tried doing it CASE SPECIFIC, and w00ts, arail narrow gives a smaller font, without forking out for font magnifer(unmagnifier)

Hey if you guys want to post links to screenshots that would be cool!

Hi Darla, dunno how to post pics, but linked to a set:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/i_is_locus/sets/72157600195883877/

Got a couple tips on font type wit examples, certain fonts dont have numbers, larger fonts, like the N-Gage fonts wont display anywhere but in operator, where it (may) scroll.

Sorry Darla to double post in a row, but i just figured that it might pay to point out only TRUE type fonts not Open type. i seem to get squares, (they all say *.ttf)

Hi...
I got a N93... but i want to enlarge my font in "Message Text" only.
Please advice me of this my problem....

Thank's a lot

OPERA MINI font start-up troubles
I have tried installing different fonts on my N80 IE, a great thing! But I have encountered a problem on Opera Mini start up. Everytime I launch the program and click on a link, I get the message "Opera mini is gathering information about your fonts" - and this takes about 3 minutes. This actually happens AFTER having switched off my phone. Once, Opera has the information, I can open and close the program without this start-up troubles...any idea to cope with this?

HI, I am trying to follow your rule, My N80 has S60SC.ccc S60TCHK.ccc and S60ZDIGI.ttf what do I do? on the desktop font folder create 3 copeis, change it to these names? or just change the .ttf file? My phone has Chinese Language, will that get affected? I mean can I still read the chinese fonts if I change it to these? Please Help.

now i need to buy a card reader LOL.
coz i can't access the full directory of my memory card. I can't shift to "data mode" becoz an app is using the memory card. I beleive because of storing the fonts to the memory card made it impossible to use the "data mode".

hmmm..the process seems to work fine..except for the fact that the phone wont go into "mass storage" mode anymore since the fonts are read directly off the memory card..so it always shows "memory card in use". Exactly what skitzo says in the above post.

but there is a small workaround... ;)

step 1 : go to Menu -> Tools -> Memory and select Remove Memory Card

step 2 : remove the memory card

step 3 : restart phone

now since memory card is not inserted, the phone reverts to default fonts.

step 4 : insert memory card and use as "mass storage" without any problems.

step 5 : restart phone with memory card inserted to get fonts back again.

The process is long and irritating but no choice if u wanna use your own fonts as well as mass storage mode.

Which Font You Are Using Darla? lol!

i Liked It May Be U Can Hook Me Up With That Font :)

Thx

Hey NawtyBoy, the font name is Neuropol.

hi darla,i'm jay from india, will u give me themes for my nokia n76 with beautiful icons, plssssssss

Can you please tell me how to change the fonts on N72 ........i need the answer very soon friend !!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear all;

good day. Thank you very much for all your inputs on how to change fonts. I'e already done all the preliminary preparations. My only problem is on how to copy my 'Fonts' folder from my laptop hard drive to my phone's 'E:/Resource' folder because through the 'Nokia PC Suite' I can only access my phone's C and D drives. I understand that the D (flash drive) drive that I can see by the use of Nokia PC Suite is actually the E drive when viewed using the Y-Browser. I tried though copying the 'Fonts' folder to my phone's Flash Drive and then I use the Y-Browser to copy it to my phone's 'E:/Resource' but to no avail. It doesn' allow me to overwrite the existing 'Fonts' folder precisely because it is currently being used by the the OS.

Guys, any other idea on how can I access my phones E: drive? Thank you!!!

Jay,

You may try www.mobango.com; surely you will find lots of themes there for your phone. Good luck.

Kent333ph

when i plugged in my n73 phone to the computer using the USB cable, i chose 'mass storage device'. the file manager fails to pop up. i am supposed to access the file manager through the computer using the USB connected to my phone right? then why doesn't it pop out? or do i have to do something to make it pop out? assist me please, i'm a newbie =) thankie_you

maddie,

Make sure that you installed your Nokia PC Suite. Once it is installed attached your phone to your PC via USB cable, double click the PC Suite Icon to open it. Once it is opened you can wee a lot of icons on it and one of them is the "file manager". You can browse you phone by double clicking it.

using my n95 i also could not get the font to change, followed your instructions lots of times, when i turn fone back on, nothing changes, my font files were named as yours and i tried to get the same one you used, moved them to where you said it still aint working, been trying to do this for months without success, im starting to doubt that changing the fonts is possible, maybe this is a windup !!

also, r.e. your instructions>> how do install the fonts to my memory card, ive moved the new font folder there like you said but theres no option to install it, i can also still use mass storage, seriously nothing at all changed, i think the fone is still using the fonts in the fone memory, and the ones in my memord card are idle somehow

yippee finally figured out wot i was doing wrong, when renaming the files DO NOT put .ttf on the end cos when i checked the files in ybrowser they were called nohindisnr60.ttf.ttf so i renamed the file nohindisnr60 and the fone automatically adds .ttf on the end, then it worked, i think user 'mau maus' was probably doing this also, cheers

thank you so much Darla for giving a fun and detailed easy-to-follow guide! i've been frustrated for being unable to change my n73's fonts after following some complicated instructions at other places. really, big thanks! cheers :D

its actually easier than i thought it'd be. But i had a few errors while trying. Note: Not all Fonts will work, some came out like random symbols so be careful wat u choose.
So all you have to do is open up your E:/ drive. Note: you cant do this with Pc suite you have to use mass storage or a memory card reader otherwise resource wont be in the list you see. and if you create a new one called resource (ur in the wrong)
So open up E:/ drive, under that, open resource. Drag your Fonts file in there and make sure you dont name the file with .ttf extention
for exaple, nohindissb60
the phone will add the extention to it automarically. For people who still didnt get it (((like myself)) hope this is helpful

Hi darla... my font in z drive is s60sc.ccc and s60tchk.ccc so how i'm gonna copy it's name?

Is it possible to use bluetooth for the transfer of files instead...? Cos I've got a Mac and no PC Suite...?

Before I make a mess of my N95... What exactly do I download from the Y Browser website...? There are sooo many different files to download there eg. Y Browser (diff versions)etc, Y Task etc...? All I want is just to change my fonts on my hp, & maybe remove the 'Notes' & 'Calculator' (found in the Office Folder) that came with my Hp. I'm not very tech savy so I feel that it's best to avoid those files that I don't really need... Thanks In Advance! :-)

hello im just wondering , i cant find my z: drive on my n9, ican only find it wen im looking through my phone using y-browser, but weniplug it in to the computer i cant find it :s rely confused if you could help me it would be great. im just bored of the standard n95 fonts they am so all the same lol ,any help wud help me thanks

tomo

I had on N95
s60sc.ccc
s60tchk.ccc
s60ZDIGI.TTF

For sample picked up comicsans.ttf
made 3 copies and renamed them as following, changing file extension in 2 cases for .ccc
Copied to card, rebooted. Working perfect.
Looks really funny.
Thanks.

Still want to ask a question:
Looks like my n95 is from Asia :) so it has English..., and 2 usless asian languages (useless for me)
On the other side I would really like to have Russian installed at least for text messaging.
Does anybody know how to do this?

change your phone code to Euro-3 and you should have russian installed with firmware

Hi,
Your method worked great, but I find that when I use "Psiloc Font Magnifer" my phone reverts back to the old fonts.
Is there any way around this?
Many thanks,
Dominic.

Hello,

for all who have problem with their n95 8gb and who have install the fonts on card and cannot remove it and no access to their card:
see how to do http://www.forummobiles.com/index.php?showtopic=172448&st=30,
it save me but it's in french language (traduce with google)

thanks..after a few tries i finally got it..thanks..

I came to try this after I had installed the Font Magnifier software. Hence, when I put the replacement fonts onto the memory card, the phone would not read the font during startup -- it prioritizes the replacement fonts installed on the C-drive by the Font Magnifier software. After I removed the Font Magnifier software, the phone easily loaded the new font during startup (if the font was compatible - I have seen fonts not get loaded and some fonts are not displayed correctly.

In other words, easy-peasy: Put the new fonts in the \resource\Fonts folder on your memory card, and restart the phone. Make sure you do have a way to access the memory card without using the USB connection to your phone - e.g. with a memory card reader connected to your PC. (This is necessary because the phone system automatically detects the "resource" folder at any time when the memory card is plugged in, and the files there are not allowed to be written/deleted.)

@ubuntuser

Hey, I have n95 8gb and i have set custom fonts to e:/resource/fonts. It works but as u wrote, i dont have access to transfer data option anymore, whats worse my opera mini font broke and some other things went bad. How can i restore the oryginal fonts, please could u explain a little bit more from the site http://www.forummobiles.com/index.php?showtopic=172448&st=30,
Please help, i dont know what to do, and i heard that even hard reset doesnt help with this situation.

<---- i dont understand this part..can someone please tell me how to transfer into the mobile?
