EQO Offers More Than Just Mobile Skype

by Darla

Screenshot00061_1 Screenshot00051_1 When EQO was first announced it seemed like the ideal temporary solution for Skype users.  Now they have extended the service to include more instant messenger services.  Sounds like a perfect solution to replacement for Agile Messenger since they are now charging for usage.

Announced in October, the new version of EQO now includes AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, GoogleTalk, Jabber, MSN Messenger and Yahoo! along with Skype.  With EQO users can access all of their IM services from their phone and exchange free text and picture messages with other EQO users.

"The notions of presence, identity and community -- so crucial in the online world -- have been glaringly absent from mobile phones, the most personal of all personal technology devices," said Bill Tam, CEO of EQO Communications. "We're extending the most popular IM communities and social networks to the mobile phone to give people those capabilities anywhere they go."

Update Features Include:

  • Syncronize contacts from multiple IM buddy lists and multiple IM accounts
  • Check who's online and available with real-time presence
  • Make and receive mobile VoIP calls using Skype
  • Create and maintain a personalized mobile profile, expressing their mood and location by uploading pictures and text directly from their phone
  • Exchange web-to-phone, phone-to-web and phone-to-phone text and picture messages with a simple click-to-call or click-to-IM feature

EQO is available for download from the company website (or you can just click the big orange banner below) and is available on all J2ME capable devices.

I downloaded this and installed to my Cingular 6682, but it requires isp.cingular not wap.cingular in order to work. Apparently the MediaMax Unlimited plan ($19.99) won't cut it. I spoke to the Cingular reps and the cheapest plan that gives unlimited data is the SmartPhone Connect plan ($39.99), and that's double the cost. Not quite worth it just to add IM and Skype.

It does look interesting tho.

Hey CL,

I'm using this with no problems using Cingular's Unlimited MEdia Net on the Pick Your Plan prepaid. It should work with those settings.

I was googling info regarding EQO and Cingular's Media Net working together. But like CL's response that EQO does not seem to work unless you sign up with Cingular's Data Plan(s), just Unlimited Media Net doesn't seem to allow EQO to "log-in". I have Media Net and can connect to websites, but EQO only indicates not connecting. How are you able to use EQO with just Media Net? Do you have specific settings configured? Thanks for you time
