Nokia PC Suite Wishlist
by Darla
I've heard many people say that they don't use PC Suite. I wouldn't say that I completely rely on it, but I will say that I use it avidly. With the newer S60 devices and all the cool new features installed there are a few features that I would love to see in a future edition of PC Suite.
Podcast Support: It would be nice if maybe there was a type of drag and drop system to just place podcast links in to sync with the podcast application. Maybe this could be incorporated into PC Suite or a separate app like Lifeblog. Or maybe they can just add an import function into the Nokia Music Manager. I recently tried to subscribe to the Nseries Studio video podcast and had no way of getting the feed to the N91 other than typing it in manually.
Feed Reader Support (Web Feeds): I guess this would go hand in hand with the above request. As much as I like the fact that you can open and save feeds from the new s60 browser it would be easier to maybe transfer feeds via OPML from your desktop feed-reader and then sync them over, since this isn't an option that is built into the Web Feeds itself. Although it importing OPML podcasts is possible in the Podcast application.
Bookmark Support: I know that I have mentioned this in the past (repeatedly) but its an issue with me. I remember many many many Nokia's ago, the USA website had a way of manually adding bookmarks via the website (that secure mouse thing) and sending them to the phone. I believe this was done prior to S60 hitting the US because I had a 7210 (S40) at the time. But its more annoying than that. How often do we switch phones? I'm sure there are many of us that either carry 2+ phones or upgrade phones every 6 months. I wrote a hack about transferring bookmarks last year but unfortunately it isn't possible to use this when transferring from 2nd edition to 3rd edition... until of course the 3rd edition FExplorer comes out. But who really wants to do it that way. I can say this though... the transfer application on the 3rd edition devices do allow for the transfer of bookmarks between each other but not from a 2nd edition to a 3rd edition. Plain and simple... bookmark support is needed.
I know there are more things that I can think of, like bringing back that Image Creator but since playing around with Photoshop I guess I can edit my own images. Can you think of anything else that should belong on the PC Suite Wishlist?
EDIT: In regards to the BookMark feature, I've recently discovered that the recent version of PC Suite does in fact offer a method of bookmark support for the N93. So this needs to be changed to support ALL the compatible devices.

Thanks Darla for feedback!
I just forwarded the link to this page to the PC Suite team :)

Hi Darla, I'm Moca, getting into Mobile development lately...
I would add to your list synchronise support with other email apps such as Thunderbird.
I have been using maybe 25% of its features. The main reason I dont use the rest is pretty stupid but hey feedback is feedback. I find the app not a "serious" app. It does not have a real application feeling, I blame the UI with all the popups all over the place, wierd rounded corners etc... not standard to what we are used to on desktop applications...
Of course breaking the standard rules is a must but only when it is for the best :)

I'd love to see the Nokia Multimedia Converter somehow incorporated into the PC Suite! Maybe add a few new features, since the new S60-phones handle video so much better, like Nokia N93!

Darla,
good topic. The other thing that would be great, especially if PC Suite could detect that QuickOffice is installed (or maybe it should be part of quickoffice?) would be a synch of office applications, so that if I update it on the phone, then it automatically updates the version on my desktop too. Palm and DocumentsToGo did this and it was brilliant.

Bruce,
That actually sounds like a good idea! I'm surprised they didn't make that option available with the app. I just love sync compatibility :) I guess thats what makes Handy Safe a great app.

Hey Darla I dont want to hurt your feelings about PC suite but I think there are more practical services available now. I am only referring to contact and calendar backup.
I personally prefer to keep an online backup so you can actually enjoy the freedom of mobility.
I have recently come across to a very interesting service www.zyb.com. Its a free online phone backup service based on syncML. It provides online management, backup, and sharing to phone data.
For more details do visit: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/contacts/zyb-backs-up-your-contacts-online-193493.php

I really would like to see groups support in the contacts, as right now the only way to manage caller groups is on the phone.

I just noticed something else with the Music Manager. When selecting genre there is no entry for Podcasts, however, on the N91 you can edit the Genre to Podcast. Lol, sorry for the nitpicking.

My only wish is that they release an update so that my phone and laptop are once again in synch now that I am using Windows Vista.

Darla, actually PC Suite 6.81 (available from www.nokia.com/pcsuite) allready supports Bookmarks synchronization with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. However, this is possible with only few latest S60 phone models. But nice feature combined with latest S60 web browser.

Hey MobileMan,
Yeah I found that out while syncing the N93. So far that seems to be the only model that I've heard of.

Hi Darla, perhaps I am missing something, but I cannot accept any calendar mtg requests sent from Outlook to my Nokia E61. I have the Mail for Exchange configured and PC Suite, etc. Direct Push works fine, just there seems to be no option to accept calendar invites.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird and wish to sync my Nokia 9500 with my email, calender and address book. PC Suite only offers Outlook and Lotus Notes. Please ... don't force us into using proprietary apps. Give us more options and better use of our phones and your limited PC Suite.

Ability to sync my calendars/contacts with 2 PCs. At the moment this cannot be done which makes the Nokia PIM a lot less functional than the Palm or PocketPC.

Synchronization between NOKIA and Thunderbird:

(free, open-source, but only support 62xx and 71xx)

Dear Darla,
Congratulations on your page and the PC Suite Wish List. I do not know if it is still alive, but it should since it is a very good idea.
I do use PC Suite; actually, I purchased a Nokia 2630 because it was the cheapest phone that could sync with Outlook on my PC. The huge limitation I find is that PC Suite did not consider the Expense Manager feature and there is no way to sync it with a PC spreadsheet. Do you know what steps we could take to make that possible.
Thank you for your attention to the present message and for all your work on the blog.
Sincerely
Bernardo.
