Nokia Gets Sporty With The S60 5500
by Darla
Nokia announced today its sporty new S60 5500. Pretty hot!! Seems to have that comfortable shape as the S40 3220. The Nokia 5500 was built for the active user. No more worrying about dropping your smartphone while jogging, hiking, cycling... you know the drill. I think I like the word rugged more than sporty. Its nice to see a more rugged S60 device added to the line-up.
The 3rd edition S60 will have 3 dedicated modes which can be switched using a single button. Phone Mode, Music Mode and Sports Mode. The 5500 also offers "text-to-speech" technology.
The Sporty 5500 is scheduled to be available this summer and is expected to retails for around 300 EUR before taxes. No news on whether this will make it to the states... but you know how we do!
Key Features of the Nokia 5500 include:
- Tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 (GPRS and EDGE support)
- 3D Motion Sensor (used in pedometer / training application and in games)
- 107 mm x 45 mm x 17 mm and weighs 103g (one of the smallest and lightest S60 Nokia phones ever)
- 208 x 208 square screen resolution (the first S60 device in this configuration)
- 2 Megapixels Camera
- USB Mass Storage class support
- MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA music playback
- 3 Modes which are themed in different colours throughout the interface
- S60 3rd Edition
- MicroSD Memory Card Slot
- Built in Flashlight
- FM Radio (Visual Radio Supported)

phil showed it to me today.
it's really clever.
i think nokia got it right on this one.
it's sort of s60 paring down to s40, then some geat stuff added.

I'm just glad to see a more sporty addition to the s60 family. They didn't have to change the screen-size though.

Nokia did a great job designing the 5500, except that as what i've posted, the nokia 5500 really designed look like a pear to me. But i still think that some of the Nokia's fan would love this design.

Here's an idea, how about before complaining about lack of Bluetooth and IR you read up on it first?

All S60 phones have Bluetooth (I don't think its a forced feature, but they have all had it) and most older ones had IR with some newer ones seeing IR make a reappearance.
