Secrets of the Nokia Mobile Sites

by Darla

One of the reason that I prefer to have an unlocked phone is that it doesn't have the provider restrictions.  Certain functions and features that service providers feel are not necessary will  not make its way onto the handset.  Thats how it happens here in the states.

Another way to look at it is being able to have an international device that it used worldwide.  Being such a fan of Nokia's handsets I often check out their different country sites online and armed with my 6630 I can do the same on the mobile sites.

Now I know there is someone reading this that is thinking, "who the hell cares", but I also know that there is someone out there that shares my same feeling about this.  I come across some pretty neat things checking out the different mobile sites.  For example:

Did you know you can customized your Nokia Sensor App with new frames and avatars?

Fescr003_2_3 I don't know how many people still use the Sensor App but I do.  I actually get a kick out of using it in crowded places.

Now one can easily do this on their own by simply finding a pattern you like and sizing it 18 x 185 and sending it to their phone, but being able to see other designs is cool.

The avatars (which isn't in this screen shot) is basically to replace your photo image and is actually more fun to use if you are trying not to be seen.  Lol, sending your folio with your image will definately have people turning heads to see where the hell this is coming from.  Even if you choose not to use any of the provided frames to download it as least gives you an idea of what you can do.  The downloads are free by the way.

Nokia Downloads:

Fescr004_6Ok, so maybe you won't use this app but aren't you just a bit curious to know whats offered in different areas of the world?  Did you know that Nokia offered a news feed reader and a mobile ticker?

It would be nice if these tid bits could be available to Nokia's US mobile site, which by the way isn't working for some reason.

Now comes the downfall to all of this.  Certain links on the mobile sites won't work if you are using a handset thats only supported in the US.  You might get an error message "terminal not supported" or something to that affect.  Applications such as the News Feed Reader should be made as an add on app via the website since you can add the feeds that you like.

Personally, thats why I am eagerly awaiting the N80.  I like to jump around from country to country and its cool that I get to do it via my handset without restrictions.

Nokia's Mobile Sites have been popular to many people and other areas of Nokia as well such as their Club Nokia program which lasted in the US for maybe a year, but continues to be available in other areas of the world... but thats another blog post.

So, if you are fortunate to have an "internationally available" Nokia (unlocked sounds so bleh) check out the different mobile sites and you might find something that interests you.

"Unlocked" may sound "bleh" but "internationally available" is a euphamism that takes away the impact of the true meaning here: that the US carriers "lock" the phones they sell, limiting thier customers' use.

You are absolutely correct, and hopefully in the future this will in fact change, but what I meant by "internationally available" is a s60 device thats available in all regions. For example, the 6600, 3650 and the N-Gages. With those devices even though the providers have made their adjustments, it would not prevent the Nokia mobile sites from identifying the handset and denying content.
Case in point... the Nokia 6682 is available in the US and Canada but not overseas, so accessing the sites that I mentioned would not be possible.

Quite interesting, I didn't realize there is more to mobile.nokia.com than what I see with my Finnish language (unlocked Nokia prototype :) phone! What I can see currently is only some ringtones, pictures and themes. BTW, have you tried surfing to www.nseries.com with S60 browser?

Darla

Hey Jukka,
I just checked it out today with my 6630. It looks good!! Lol, no downloads though :)

Thank you for a nice suggestion for my 6630!
