It's no rumor. From the T-Mobile site: On March 1, 2006, the charge to send individual text and instant messages (SMS) to a US wireless number from the US will increase from 5¢ to 10¢ per message. This change will also apply to individual SMS messages that you receive while in the US, including scheduled alerts. If you subscribe to a monthly messaging bundle, this change applies to any additional SMS messages used after reaching your monthly allotment.

The charge to send SMS to an international number from the U.S. remains at 15¢ per SMS. The charge to send SMS while you are roaming internationally remains at 35¢ per SMS. © 2006 T-Mobile USA, Inc.
