Send Secure Mobile Payments Via SMS With TextPayMe
by Darla
Textually.org reports the launching of a new serice offering secure mobile payments for mobile users in the US.
TextPayMe allows users to send money to others via text messaging. To deliver a payment, a user simply enters the amount he or she wishes to send and the recipient's cell phone number (or personal alias) -- the transaction is instantaneous.
You can withdraw your money to your bank account anytime through electronic transfer. You can also request a check to be sent to you. For a limited time, all new users will receive their first 5 withdrawals free.
Currently, TextPayMe is in its beta phase, but if you sign up now you get an instant $5.00.

Looks like finally someone is doing something right... I signed up the second I found out about it because I was looking for a way to sell stuff easier on craigslist... I must say it's a pretty awesome service!

There are systems in Europe and in the Philippines that're entirely SMS based; quicker and easier. Just saw a similar set up from a US company called Sapphire that's launching soon. It's run by a group that includes a OSS KDE Linux guru and one of the founders of the original MAC ATM network... Plus they have some cool features TextPayMe doesn't... I'll update when I hear it's up.

I have heard of a similar system also ready to launch later this year. Called TXTeller, it is completely free, unlike TextPayme.com. (Which I understand has a lot of hidden fees.) They (txteller) have been in developement and beta for close to two years. I will definitely relay any info I can get once the company launches.
